Ancient Greek Relief Sculpture – «The Triumph of Achilles»
The wrath of Achilles that sealed the fate of Troy.”
In Book 22 of Homer’s Iliad, the epic reaches its most dramatic climax. Devastated and consumed by grief over the death of his beloved companion Patroclus, Achilles returns to the battlefield seeking vengeance. He confronts Hector, the prince and defender of Troy, beneath the city's impenetrable walls.
Victored in their legendary duel, Achilles binds Hector’s body to his war chariot. Spurring his horses into a furious gallop, he drags his fallen rival around the citadel, right before the eyes of the grieving Trojans and King Priam.
This pediment relief captures the raw emotion, tragedy, and heroic intensity of the Homeric epic—the moment human fate collides with divine wrath.
