Early Bronze Age Sculptural Model – «The Sacred Dance & Ritual Toasting» (c. 2000 BC)
The sacred circle of community, ritual dance, and divine offerings in ancient Cyprus.”
During the Early Bronze Age (circa 2000 BC), the prehistoric artisans of Cyprus created some of the most expressive and enigmatic terracotta models of the ancient Mediterranean.
This rare sculptural composition depicts a sacred ceremonial scene: figures arranged in a devotional circle, engaging in a ritual dance while holding small vessels, cups, and offering bowls. In prehistoric Mediterranean cultures, sacred dances were intrinsically linked to ceremonial feasting, group toasts, and liquid libations (spondes) honoring ancient deities or ancestors.
The abstract, highly stylized human forms emit a powerful primal presence, making it a masterpiece of prehistoric art and symbolic storytelling.
