According to myth, Pelops fell in love with Hippodameia, daughter of King Oenomaus, and had to defeat him in a chariot race to win her hand. With the aid of Poseidon and the charioteer Myrtilus, Pelops succeeded, leading to his marriage with Hippodameia and the foundation of the Pelopid dynasty.
