In Antiquity, it was called Strombos (στρόμβος) or Bembix (βέμβιξ).

Ceramic spinning top, inspired by a museum piece from the Acropolis.

Beyond a simple toy, the spinning top was used by ancient philosophers, including Plato, as a metaphor for the concept of "rest within motion"—something that moves rapidly yet remains fixed on its axis.
