One of the earliest and most important paintings from the so-called « House of Frescoes » at Knossos is that of the « Blue Bird ». At the centre, against a white background, is a blue bird perched on a rock. Only parts of the wings and its small feet are preserved. The surrounding landscape, which consists mainly of rocks, wild roses and irises, is particularly impressive. The freedom of the outlines, the use of lively colours and the pronounced naturalism are all characteristic of this composition.
The scene is full of life, yet conveys an extraordinary sense of tranquility and harmony.
