A precise archaeological study in Attic Black-Figure pottery.
This Lekythos (16cm) is a faithful reconstruction of the 6th-century B.C. oil vessels, essential in both daily life and funerary rituals of Ancient Athens. The central iconography focuses on the Hoplite, the citizen-soldier who defined the Greek city-state.
The scene depicts a clash of warriors, highlighting the transition to the organized phalanx warfare. The figures are rendered with the traditional "incised" technique, where details of the musculature and armor are scratched into the black slip.
Lekythoi were not just vessels; they were symbols of status and devotion in Ancient Athens, often used to offer precious oils to the gods.
