Hippodamia abducted by Pelops

Hippodamia abducted by Pelops

This amphora is a faithful replica of an ancient red-figure vase depicting the famous abduction of Hippodameia. According to myth, Pelops fell in love with Hippodameia, daughter of King Oenomaus, and had to defeat him in a chariot race to win her hand. With the aid of Poseidon and the charioteer Myrtilus, Pelops succeeded, leading to his marriage with Hippodameia and the foundation of the Pelopid dynasty.

The abduction scene was a popular theme in vase painting, symbolizing power, love, and destiny.
