Analatos Amphora geometric loutrophoros

New Analatos Amphora geometric loutrophoros

The Analatos Amphora is an exceptional example of early Proto-Attic pottery, dating approximately to 700-675 BC. This vessel is attributed to the anonymous artist known as the Analatos Painter, considered one of the most significant vase painters of his time. The name derives from the Analatos area in Attica, where his first works were discovered.

This amphora is distinguished by its intricate decoration, featuring three main zones with depictions:

Central zone: Depicts a procession of chariots drawn by two horses with riders, where the colors of the horses alternate between black and red. The riders hold reins and whips, while the spaces are adorned with zigzag lines and floral motifs.

Upper and lower zones: Include geometric and floral patterns, such as rosettes and palmettes, complementing the central depiction.

The art of the Analatos Painter is characterized by the transition from the Geometric to the Orientalizing period, introducing new themes and motifs in vase painting. The Analatos Amphora stands as a significant example of this evolution in ancient Greek ceramics.
